View Full Version : Custom Tuning Questions
This is probably one of the things that confuses me most about modern cars.
What is involved in getting a custom tune and how is it any different from something like a Cobb AccessPort? Do they simply use a device like that along with software to create and upload a custom map for your car or is it completely different? Is it worth the benefits or is it better to just use something like the AccessPort?
I would like to be able to have 2 different tunes and be able to switch between them easily, one for fuel economy and one for power. it would be neat to have these somehow be linked to the "normal" and "sport" switch considering if you have it set to one of those, you'd probably want to have the corresponding tune selected, but that isn't really necessary.

if you want to have two different tunes that you can switch between at moments notice, you are going to need the accessport :) its very convenient in that sense. The accessport comes with maps on it that are general tunes for our cars and not our car specific. fun for quick power gains, but not bringing out our cars true potential.
The beauty of the accessport is this though, if you go to a cobb tunning tuner, they will make custom maps for your car in specific that satisfies all your cars upgrades and mods, to bring out the best in performance. If you ask i couldnt tell you everything that goes into a tune but a few things are air fuel ratios, boost etc.
I guess that answers enough of my questions anyways, either way they use something similar to the accessport, its not that one is more in-depth then the other, is that correct?
If so, it would seem that the accessport is the way to go for me.

Once i get my exhaust done, im going to get a cobb acessport
Not only is it good for tuning, but its like a mini computer, you can look at all your infomation about your car (oil temp, boost, etc.)
Even if a check engine light pops up you can check what the problem is with it

Hi
If you would like some more info on the cobb access port this is my review from the one I have.
I tested with all 91 maps stage 1 and 2 on a stock car and used the port to check the 0-60 times and dyno numbers on both stages.
But after more reading I would hold on the stage 2 maps till you reach the req spec i.e. full turbo back ex or 3inch down pipe to high flow cat to 3inch pipe to sport muffler.
But yes the port is great cobb maps to custom map back to stock in a sec.
Plus the real time monitor is awsome who needs to install a boost guage or air-oil tem guage or abs monitor when you get it all in one and it plugs and goes.
can't beat it.lol
Any way hope this and my review helps.

That is why I went with custom RRE toon.

Hi
Well the port maps stage one are for stock muffler but the intake does not realy matter on a RA but for evo they do have specific maps for intakes.
But for your mods you might be better off taking your port to a cobb tuner and have a custome tune done for the mods you have also to get the max power out of your mods and they will save that map to your port for future use.

The AccessPort should be the same for both the RA and the EVO. It reads which car it is plugging to and asks you to verify it before starting merge. Only one car at a time though on the AP.
