View Full Version : Why we need larger FMIC

So, I have read many posts on replacing the FMIC on our Ralliarts with one from an Evo X (or aftermarket). I have been trying to find info on what the relationship is from size to power. Well, after following a couple links on "Required Reading" I found this great tidbit:

Wondering if your intercooler is up to snuff? The big test: measure your intercooler outlet temperature! When I did this I got a K type thermocouple, the thin wire kind, slid it under the throttle body/up pipe hose and down into the center of the up pipe, and went for a drive. On an 80 to 85 deg day I got a WOT temperature of 140 deg, for a 55 to 60 deg approach. That tells me that I need more intercooler. If I can get the temperature down to 100 deg, the air density in the intake manifold goes up by 7%, so I should flow 7% more air and presumably make 7% more hp. On a 350 hp engine that is 25 hp increase.

On a similar note, CBRD is working on a direct replacement larger FMIC (http://forums.evolutionm.net/09-lancer-ralliart-general/529699-cbrd-ralliart-developments-testing-7.html)

Cheers!

Good info! I was always a little confused about the relationship between cold air and power. It all has to do with compression. Cold air takes up less space than hot air so the colder the air, the more you can fit into the engine, the bigger the explosion because fire needs air to burn.

Heat is your enemy.

^^^Yup!
Stock intercooler will heat soak by the end of a dyno pull :P
Upgraded intercooler is a must if you plan on making consistent power.

Evo X FMIC, Evo X UICP, Evo X LICP, is doing a great job & adding power after tune approx. +16whp +16wtq.

Evo IX bov holds 22psi no problems. ;)

Thanks!, I was looking for something exactly like that, and #'s are about what I expected;

Turboback Exhaust+ Intake
Max Horsepower: 238.58 whp
Max Torque: 253.78 ft.lbs

Turboback Exhaust+ Intake + FMIC
Max Horsepower: 262.25whp
Max Torque: 269.93 ft.lbs

I would be happy with 262/269, so now I need to start my secret savings plan. (wife says I spend too much on toys)

The stock FMIC can't even cool a stock RA properly.

Here is a good comparison of data of OEM FMIC vs. CBRD FMIC from my personal RA from awhile back:

Manifold and intake temps

Thanks Bryan!
Do you by chance have Evo X FMIC temps on RA?

Cool, thanks Bryan, I know you have been working on this.

Unless you are a fan of Robert Jordan, then WoT = Wheel of Time ;-)

Seems like changing the FMIC, LICP and UICP, plus a Turbo-back exhaust, and a good tune, will net the most HP gain for the buck.

Oh, and I am sure come cool stickers would help too.
