So, if anyone is thinking of designing their own parts for the RA and wants to be able to model it then send to a machine shop, you should check out 123D.
http://www.123dapp.com/

It can output to standard industry formats that CNC machines use, so yeah, this isn't sketchup.

Try using Project Photofly instead of a ruler...

I was just talking to my co-worker about that! How awesome it would be to take your digital camera to do 3d work.
Its like you read my mind or was listening in from 400 miles away!
:D:cool:

Thanks again!

You'll never find the listening device!

Hah!

j/k...
The technology is really new. It's not as accurate as a laser scan, but will give you a good start for say a proof of concept model, ensure basic clearances are met and so on.

You could create the 3d mesh with photofly and then maybe import into 123D? Haven't tried but worth a shot.

I knew it! You work for the man & you're keeping a tab on me or helping me keeping myself preoccupied. :D

Laser scan huh? how much would that cost?

Im going to give photofly a try with 123d.

Thanks again Blackbeast for the info.
