From what I've read, you can get away with a 225-width tire with a profile of 40 or 45. Anything wider than that runs the risk of coming off the wheel.

A buddy of mine's running 235's

I'd say 235 max, but nothing is safely reliable/reasonable above 225. The stock wheels are only 7", not 7.5. very narrow

I was using 225 40 18 when I had stock wheels.Any bigger will look weird imo.The 225's are a little to big so 235 will look way to big. What is your reasoning behind getting wider tires on the stock wheels? I doubt you will notice much performance gain from using wider than 215 on stock wheels.at least I didnt feel any difference with 225's.

Well the reason is I was gonna run some Toyo R888 for track And autocross
Toyo does not make a 215 series tire for an 18" rim so my only choice is to go 225

The stock suspension is really nice I figure I'll start with the tires and later the brakes
I also figure I don't need a really wide tire if I run the R888 since it's a compound tire but if I was using a street tire it might help me going with the wider tire like a 245 but at that point I would need new rims

Please let us know how you find the R888s on a RA.

I used Toyo RA-1s on my old car, and they were great once you got some heat in them.

I know someone with 255 tires on his stock wheels.

A 255? Talk about sidewall deflection!

He is at the track almost every weekend, too. It can definitely be done.

Interesting. 7" rim seems very small for a 255 tire.

On my 928 S4, I ran a 255/40 on the rear, but it was a 9" wide rim.

So will a 235/35 fit well or would it be best to just do 225/40?

Is it possible to see the pics of your friends RA with the 255 on stock rim?

BOTH of those sizes aren't the best fit for our cars. The better size choices are 225/45 and 235/40. Both of the sizes you listed will be more than 2% different.

Both of you realize that if you put a tire wider than 225 on a 7" rim, it will HURT performance, right? 225 mm wide tire is almost 9" wide. Think about that. What happens when you go wider than that, the centerline of your tire is forced out and your contact patch is reduced, reducing traction in all aspects.
Maybe this will give you a better idea.
left, rim too wide/tire too narrow
center, tire too wide/rim too narrow
right, well.........right as in just right as in tire width/rim width matched

Drew sup man, I am wondering if running 225/45 on stock RA wheels would be ok? Will I loose any performance etc?

I personally think 225/45 on the stock RA wheels is the way to go for one reason. If you happen to have a great deal on some Evo X wheels fall in your lap, you can actually put the 225's on the X wheels too, and just go with wider tires once they wear out.

Thats exactly what I was thinking actually. I got a quote for $392 out the door on 225/45/18 95W..whats your take on 95W? Shop said I would be fine going up to 95W. Stock RA tires are 93Y..any input?

The numerical value (93 & 95) is the load rating, so going higher is fine. It just means that the tires technically will support more weight in the car. The alpha characters (W & Y) are actually the speed rating. Typically, you don't want to go with a lower speed rated tire (W is lower than Y). But there is zero chance of your RA exceeding either one of those, as they are 168mph and 186mph, respectively...lol. So you will be just fine.

Thanks for your answers Drew! So with 225/45/18 95W on stock RA wheels will be fine? Thinking about pulling the trigger and buying that size..
