i test drove a MR the other day at puente hills and i love the transmission very smooth and precise shifting but even in the MR i felt no kick like the M3 had.
still great tranny tho i love it.

Anyone with a few weeks of driving a new Ralliart care to share their impressions about the SST?

I've owned my Ralliart for a month now, almost 1,000 miles. I love it. The transmission is so precise, and i love driving it better then the manuals i've owned. Does exactly what I expect of it. The car is just begging for more sound though. The transmission will sound sweet once the exhaust is given a deeper sound.
Just got mine--so i cant exactly have a good enough opinion on the SST.
But for as long as ive been driving the RA (3 days including today) the SST feels great :D

What happens?
I've had mine for about a week now. Overall I think that it is a kick ass transmission. Normal driving and manual control are fantastic.
Here are a couple of odd things I have noticed that make stop and go somewhat interesting.
When slowing down, the tranny uses engine braking to help slow the car till a certain speed (under 5mph w/ foot on brake) it disengages the clutch so the car seems to suck a braking for a sec
Under slow acceleration, it is slipping the clutch pretty aggressively to give it that automatic feel for a bit longer than I would like before it engages all they way and you start accelerating faster than before. Takes a bit of getting used to.
To be honest, I'm not sure how Mitsu could have made it any better without being a full auto. The problems listed above are pretty much the same problem you have in stop and go with a traditional manual accept that you don't know for sure when the clutch is going to let go or fully grab. I got used to it in a couple of days though.

That's interesting about the clutch sound. I can't hear the clutch on mine. In fact, really the only time I hear the tranny is when going from reverse to drive. I'm pretty sure it is just the tranny changing gears too.

im going back to the dealer on this issue. My car has the same problem, but mine, you can actually feel a clunk in the steering wheel, and theres a very audible "cachink" when you step on the gas from coasting. this was not happening when the car was new, maybe they have to adjust something.

GuYs,
Try this on for size! So far i'm the 2nd Trans to leak after a few hunderd miles. According to the dealership, they had a EVO Mr. Five miles on it and it leaked away. Mitsu flew a couple of there Tech out to see what happen. Now they want to keep my car and fix it.. I'm thinking move of taking it back asking for another car. Any thoughts guys? Now i'm worry how is the trans going to hold up, how much gear oil leaked out, is my gears alright??

Last I was told by our local Mitsubishi tech guru, they (mitsubishi dealers) don't service those transmissions, they replace them as complete units, so you would be getting a transmission with the lastest and greatest parts. Why swap cars?

I've got similar issue. only at low speed around 5-10mph after complete stop.
If I shift manually it doesnt happen, only in auto mode.
Also the paddel shifter always skip 1 gear ahead using auto mode.
(i.e: from D1st to 3rd, D3rd to 5th. D2nd to 4th.)
I always down shift first in auto mode to correct this. D1st to 1st. D3rd to 2nd, and so on...
Paddle shifter and stick in manual mode is fine.

DO yal think I need a new tranny too? Maybe I should go talk to my dealer?

ok, I tested again in traffic condition this morning.
Auto mode seem to be fine now no more jerking on take off.
I came to complete stop and lightly press Gas and it took off smooth.
I keep my experience posted.
12 more days and its two months old.

It has its positives and negatives; however, most of my discomfort with it probably stems from unfamiliarity. Also, one of the only major, objective fault I can find with the SST does not affect me: no launch control/the inability to do a hard launch. Since I don't drag, that is a non-issue. I'd much rather have a car that can tear up the tarmac and gravel roads than one that can go fast in a straight line.
All that being said, I've also only driven the car for about 600 miles. I'm not yet ready to drive the car hard, but when I do, it won't bother me at all that it doesn't have a super-sport mode because I'll be manually controlling it. Also, at that point, a couple of the other weaknesses might become an issue: First, I'd want to upgrade the cooling (and increase the fluid capacity). Second, I'd want to upgrade it to hold more power.

I test drove the car strictly in Auto mode, I did not even touch the paddle shifters or move the stick to the side for manual mode.
setting was at normal and Tarmac.
This is the only way I want to drive a ralliart (auto only) It is just the way I am so and I am deaf, (and never have been good at engine/clutch sound diagnosis)
But I want to know what types of driving must be avoided during auto (never touching shifters) to prevent damaging the TC-SST?
I ruined a Saab 900 turbo transmission by going airborne, without the clutch engaged, the tooths broke on the gears from what the maintenance said 15 years ago. (Moms car :D)
but I dont know if manual must be used in some situation regarding TC-SST
And can you switch between sport and normal while moving?
My belief was normal for my daily driving, sport for mountains and hills...
Any thoughts?

It's okay to switch between norm and sport on the fly I do it all the time, you just don't want to do it back and forth really fast. If your going 60+ in sport and switch to normal you usually won't notice the change until you start to break (unless you keep accelerating). If you only want to use auto don't sweat it, if you want to go manu but are worried don't be. the TC-SST down matches revs perfectly and probably better than we would. Unless i'm going into turns the computer might not expect i leave the stick in standard position. It is going to down shift to protect the engine no matter what mode you are in. More importantly don't let rpm red line be bouncing back and forth on a late upshift

no problem keeping it in auto and normal. I do most of my driving like that. I actually don't get into sport mode much for normal driving around town and in the city. I feel like I'm beating the crap out of the transmission when I do. It's awesome in the hills on twisty roads though. I use the paddles in fast traffic in the city where i need to down shift quickly to get in and out of lanes quickly, but honestly if your not in a hurry, I see no need to ever take it out of auto/normal mode if you don't want to.

Thanks for the feedback. Its just the common words that go regarding the TC-SST as "manual-auto" not pure auto though. Confuses a bit if some part of manual is needed.
But I face mostly stop and go traffic in my daily driving though.

If you do end up at an autocross or track event, be sure to turn off the ASC completely. Ask me how I know?? lol It makes a huge difference in the shifting during these types of events where you want to get everything out of the car.
To be clear, this is not needed or recommended for the street or regular driving just when you are competitive driving. FWIW.

I haven't tried it, but I was wondering if the SST would have any effect on doing donuts? I wounder if it would hold the gear or shift through it. I'm not even sure if our car has the power to do donuts honestly? What do you guys think? ASC off and in Sport/Manual mode?

What happens?
i guess he means that you can't enjoy it when this situation happens...
Any how I enjoy it too.. one question all the noise that is produced when in sport mode is from what? Is it the all exhaust gases being produced to spool the turbo, also it sound like there a exhaust system while in the car, you know, but when your outside of it or having someone drive and pass by you the exhaust is relatively quiet so it not like a mimic of the F430 where when your in sport mode the exhaust tone gets louder and deeper.

I think it more like you get throttle happy...
I read somewhere when you r in Sport Mode Turbo Spool up faster than Normal Mode...

For donuts, turn off traction control, put in manual, full lock either way, depress brake hard, hit accelerator, preload to 3k revs and drop the brake.
Then enjoy drifitng around and around in a circle, feel free to tap the handbrake for extra twist in when getting some grip to loose traction again.
Practice in wet, rinse and repeat.
This also goes for launching the RA. Depress brake, hit accelerator and you hear the turbo spool, the back drops then release brake. It's what I do when getting in and out of traffic on a busy day from a side street.

Hows your RA? Any major Maintenance?
My alignment is off now. Steering wheel neutral drifts right.

I don't know if you realized it but this IS a forum dedicated to the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart. This vehicle is currently ONLY available with an auto SST. MMNA doesn't seem to have any plans for a manual RA.
If I have to spell it out for you- nearly everyone here owns a RA. Though its tranny may have it's faults, we've all embraced it... with our wallets anyway. So you might be upsetting a few people by your ill-informed comment.
I'm having a hard time understanding why you've joined this forum.

Yeah I don't get it...
^He got his mind & heart set on clutch pedal H-pattern manual AWD with a hatch. But he want a RA SB but doesnt want SST, go figure..
I think if we had a clutch pedal with a overwrite switch to manually control the clutch operation would be the answer to all who want to manually control the clutch engage/disengage. Still would be Sequential instead of H-pattern.
Idk if it is at all possible from TCU & S/W side of things, I have no idea til lI learn how it all work, it just my idea anyways.

I drove home yesterday in Auto Normal for the first time in months... I hated it. Definitely love driving in Manual Sport, I know I have control of when I shift and how quickly it will do so.
Auto mode is too slow with down shift. You have to use the brake more.
Manual mode I have full control of the rpm.
Auto/Sport is kinda cool but it lack human element. 4k rpm is kinda too high for my daily drive in traffic.

12-01-2011, 04:54 PM
Hey is it possible to adjust the RPM limit from 4 k to 3.5k for sport mode this would make the car a little easier on gas make the shifts sound a little more natural and less stress on Tranny and would still be perfect for time at the track.

It's all in the TCU, which Bryan should obtain soon. Until then, how the car shifts is how the car shifts.
Yeah, its pretty much impossible to drive in sport-auto on the street. It revs way too high for normal driving. Also, I hate how in sport-manual you have no cruise control :(

No big deal for me, just flip to switch back to normal and set your CC. Once you've gotten out of CC, just flip the switch again back into sport. Takes two seconds, lol.
But I do agree about that. My guess is because it does rev so high that you don't want to have that happen in CC going uphill.
I used to drive everywhere with cruise control on. Helps save gas and keep me in the speed limit range
Its annoying to have to flip the switch every time I need to downshift or slow down. The things I do for this transmission...
