Just picked up a new exhaust system for the RA.

I'll do a write up on it later on. Right now I'm just too excited to get it installed. Short version: It's light (9.7 lbs) it's JDM (Tomei) and it's going to wake up the neighbors (pure aircraft grade titanium).

I did an earlier review when I installed this on my Evo: http://www.socalevo.net/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=37&topic=88674.msg7807369#msg7807369

How did you get it to fit on the RA?

How did you get it to fit on the RA?

It has similar connection points to that of the evo. I found toward the end that I have 3 issues with the install.

1) On the Sportback RA, the muffler tip sits inside the bumper, thus a heat shield will be needed for prolonged use. I'm sure I can find one on line for 50 bux.

2) The exhaust hanger near the rear axle is in a different location on the RA and Evo. The exhaust sits pretty snug now, but I'll make a bracket later for added support.

3) The rear bolt on a rear tie bar was dangerously too close to the exhaust piping. I removed this and life was good. Later I'll make a similar mod that RMR does with their evo 8 downpipes. That or I'll use a flush bolt.

The EXPReme Ti exhaust is a 3 piece system that utilizes slip fit flanges and race spec tensioner springs. The reduction of reduces turbulence of exiting exhaust as well as potential leaks and the need for additional gaskets.

When mounted, I would recommend seeking a heat shield for the bumper. Driving around town won't be an issue, but if you heat it up on the track, you're going to be scraping plastic off a rather pricey muffler tip.

The system is very straight from the cat (or lack there of) back with few and subtle bends.

The second exhaust hanger is temporarily orphaned until I can fabricate a supporting bracket. I noticed an unused exhaust hanger on the rear of the car that I will likely relocate. (problem solved)

Installed the silencer this afternoon.
Runs like a jasma serires system now.
Very usable! :)

I can't tell from the pictures, but can you use the Tomei as an axle back exhaust?

I just did some back to back testing of one exhaust systems on an EVO X. With the silencer in and out it was only a 8-10 hp difference on a car making 330-340 whp. The silencer makes it quiet at idle and part throttle. But at WOT and high rpm, the jet rush of exhaust through that little hole in the silencer is actually louder.

It would not work as an axle back.

Mike:

if you'd like to do a comparison test on my RA, I can leave it with you next week. I wouldn't be as interested in the peak power gains as I would to see an even gain throughout the power band.

I've been driving the car with the silencer for a week now and it makes all the difference in the world, soundwise. It's quieter at idle and WOT. I was running without the silencer for two days, and it was so loud at cruising speed, it started to vibrate parts of the interior....

Lmk,

Jason

That sucks. Not too keen on cutting the cats here in SoCal. :(

You don't need to go catless to run this system.

HKS and a few other muffler kits will sell you an axle back system for around 800, then you can buy the cat - axle back for a few hundred more later.

The EXPreme Ti system is sold as a complete "CAT BACK" system. You can purchase the titanium test pipe for off-road use a a later juncture if you like. However it is not necessary to use install and operate core muffler and piping.

You can see on my RA, it runs right up to the cat (or in my case test pipe).

You removed the rear bolt on a rear tie bar? Isn't that dangerous, I mean it must be there for a reason. Also, I am getting a Ralliart Sedan, Not the sportback, Will this exhaust bolt up on that car? Will I have to remove the rear bolt on the rear tie bar too?

I don't have a sedan, so I'm afraid I can't answer that.
The rear bolt for the tie bar simply needs to be replaced with something more flush to prevent damage to the exhaust. It's not difficult or expensive. :)

Not for the sportback. You'd have to make your own.

If you have the sedan, you may want to check out what rexspeed has to offer, or carbontrix.
