09 Muellerized Ralliart!!! crawl, walk, run.

Ok, so it's not completely Muellerized yet, but over the next few months John and the Muellerized gang are going to be doing a bunch or R&D on my car. As each item is added I'll give you guys a little review.
On Monday I brought the car over to Muellerized for it's first day of poking and prodding. One thing John said was, and this made sense to me, "if you are going to put $10k or more into this car to improve brakes, handling, ect.., you might as well just buy an Evo." So the order of business is to build the RA on a budget, but the two worst things on the RA are the brakes and the handling. How they will handle this is yet to be seen, but based on my previous experience with John working on my 3 Evolutions, I expect nothing but miracles.
Crawl.
The first thing they put on the car is a rear anti-rollbar from Whiteline. The front bar needed a little more r&d, and should be on soon. But, wow the rear bar is a real improvement. My initial impressions so far is that, besides the obvious, less body roll. The rear feels much more planted. Now by stiffening up the rear end with an ARB, a lot of cars tend to become ass happy with over steer. The RA to it's discredit normally suffers from massive amounts of under steer, and so the ARB couldn't do away with the sliding front completely, but it did reduce it considerably. I'm able now to be much harder on the throttle through turns before the front starts coming out. Fun! For sure there is much more in the suspension to be done, but thus far I'm very happy with this first step.
While at the shop we did try on a set of Evo VIII Enkeis 17x8.5 w/ Falcon Azenas 255-45-17. He he he. I know I'm giggling like a sissy, but the width on those tires gets me kind of excited. They were a bit too wide, and that scrubbed the "Hell ride" portion of the day, but next visit we will be rolling the fenders, and those wheels are going back on!!!

Nice. I have the EVO VIII Enkeis with 235s on my car right now. Even those are a bit too wide. If you can fit 255s with just a roll (I'm not willing to pull), then I'll be a happy camper. :p

With some -camber in the front, and just rolling in the rear I'm pretty sure they are going to fit 255.

They can clearance fenders with a really good result, whether it requires just a small roll of the inner fenders or a roll/pull. Either way it's a process that can have incredible results with the right philosophy and approach. Check it:

Also, those wheels are actually 17x8 +38 offset, not the 17x8.5 you listed.

:) Run them all day long on the Evo 8/9 platform. You'll notice that they don't "balloon" or "mushroom" like crazy like the internet would have you believe. They are a GREAT bang for the buck upgrade, given you can provide clearance.

Not a big fan of the slammed look. In fact, I'm not really looking to lower my car at all. I just want as much of a traction patch as I can get without rubbing every time I hit a bump.

Neither am I, Mr. Grinder brought his car in with them already on, they will be discarded soon when we go to a budget minded coilover setup.

Well the next step is in progress. I got a practically new set of Evo X gsr wheels and tires. They are 18X8.5 +38 offset (?) tires are 245-40-18. Anyway put them on, and got so excited I ended up ghetto rolling my rear fenders to make them fit my self. Yes I used a baseball bat :D. Amazingly though, no chipped paint. John said I'll still need some modifications with new bump stops to keep them from tearing stuff up when bouncing over the biggest of bumps (not exactly his words). Anyway, I have a couple of crappy photos, I'll take some better ones later. Oh yeah, amazing how much more grip these provide then the pizza cutter stockers!

Thanks, thanks. Yes they are the factory tires as well. Less than 500 mile on everything. I picked up the set for $800. The only problem is they didn't have the TPMS, so I need to bring my stock set to a Muellerized and have them switched. I think I'll save my stockers for long trips. Or I could put some offroad tires on them, lol. We'll see.
I love the way these wheels look on this car, ok it's not quite Herra Frush, but that wouldn't be functional anyway. This weekend I'll take some good photos and post them up.

Now on to the worst problem with this car. THE BRAKES!!!!!!!

Yeah, brakes suck on this car. Knowing my budget the best I will get for a while is upgraded pads, SSL, Motul rbf600 and eventually slotted rotors if these wear out.

So, it's been a while since I've posted in this thread. I just got word today that there is a set of secret sauce super stopping brake pads for my car that are being shipped to Mueller as we speak. They are the first set in the country. Once we test them on my car, they will be available at muellerized. I can't wait to finally be able to stop.

Well, I picked the brakes up from Muellerized yesterday. Here are a few photos, and so I guess based on the photo's, I'm letting the cat out of the bag. These are the new Project Mu Street pads for the Ralliart. I installed them today, and took the car out to bed them in. 30, 60, 90+mph full stops :D. Even at the higher speeds there doesn't seem to be any shuddering, or fade. It is impossible to give a truly accurate description yet based on the limitations of street driving, but so far I am really excited to have a car that can actually stop. I'll give a more detailed report by Monday night after really putting the car through the ringer.
Next on the list is lines and fluid.

Geargrinder - is Muellerized going to stock those brake pads for the ralliart? I might be missing something, but I can't find anything for ralliarts on their website. Take that back, I did see the whiteline sway bars, but no ability to order online.

The set on my car is the first set in the country (what I was told :)). Once I give the report to John Mueller, they will be available at Muellerized and on their website. I'm assuming you could call on Monday and order them.

Bump for an update! Oh wait, that's me. Didn't get a chance to "test the brakes" yesterday, well that is except for just to and from work. What I noticed though, was that usually with a more aggressive brake pad, one would need to bring them to temperature before they will stop properly, and quiet down. But these are as quiet as stock, and even from complete cold they have a good strong bite.

So, I did get to abuse the brakes finally. I have to say they are a vast improvement from the stockers. From 100mph they haul you to a stop with no vibration or fade. At 120 mph there is a little vibration by the time you come to a stop ( I think a set of slotted rotors would help to dissipate the heat that causes this) , but by the next stop though, they are perfectly smooth again. There is no warm up required with these pads, from the first stop of the day until the last, they grip firmly, but not to the point where it would be annoying in bumper to bumper traffic. This is the level of brake pads that this car should have come with. It was a big f-up on Mitsubishi's part to make a car that can achieve such high speeds, but not be able to bring it to a stop. I am very happy with these new brake pads, and I highly recommend them as one of the first must do mods on this car.

I've installed WORKS SS brake lines and there is a slight difference. The feel a little better and firmer. I'll be doing brake pads later this year and I think that'll make the biggest difference.
