Hey all,

I picked up a 2010 Lancer Ralliart Sportback yesterday.

This will be a on-going project for me. The goal is for it to speak softly but carry a big stick, well, at least for a ralliart. :)

Did some baseline pulls today. The car was 100% bone stock for this. 178 miles on the car. On the dyno was actually the first time it saw WOT.

Baseline:

192 whp / 210 wtq

17.7 psi peak tapering to 9.7 psi at 6200 RPM

12.5 AFR at peak boost (3300 rpm) tapering to 10.3 AFR (6200 rpm)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/RA_SB_stock_032810_01.jpg

This is perfectly inline with all the 2009 stock Ralliarts that have been on this dyno so the 2010 seems to be making the same power stock.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/albums/RA_Sportback_032710/RA_SB_032710_16s.jpg

Here are the stages I plan on going with this car:

1. 100% stock with custom tune

2. 100% stock with GST boost pill upgrade and custom tune

3. DW1000cc injectors, Blaqops single pump kit, GST boost pill upgrade, E85 and custom tune.

4. All of #3 plus start adding OEM Evo 10 parts like FMIC, IC pipes, etc

5. CBRD BBX?

I will be sharing all the data from these stages. I bought this car for my own development purposes, especially for SST development, to benefit all the RA and MR owners...

I'll be updating this thread as I go through the stages. :)

Sounds great I also have a ralliart sportback.
I will be taking mine to socal Mitsubishi to have a manual boost controller and evo X o2 housing with k&n drop in filter with cobb stage 2 pro tune.
Later plans 2nd spoiler, brembro brake set, evo X stock turbo, and full racing suspension.

I can't Waite to see how ur's turns out hope the see more sportback's in racing.

UPDATE: Completed stage 1, 100% stock with custom tune today:

Had to do the baseline again as our dyno computer crashed and we lost the data.

This is a custom tune, the car is still 100% stock down to the paper filter. It also has no boost pill upgrade yet.

223 whp / 241 wtq

Boost after tuning: 18.5 psi peak (3200rpm), tapering to 10 psi (7400rpm)

Boost factory stock: 17.5 psi peak (3400rpm), tapering to 9.5 psi (6500rpm)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/040310/SportBack_040310.jpg

This is now making about the same horsepower as a stock Evo 10 on our dyno.

bryan@gst

Here is a WOT run 2nd gear through 4th and just into 5th gear, on the dyno.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/040310/2nd_through_4th_intakeTemps_040310.gif

You can see the stock FMIC is ok for all of 2nd and all of 3rd but then can't keep shedding the heat anymore once into 4th.

Temp at the MAF stays constant but the Manifold temp raises 7*F

In a single 3rd gear pull the FMIC can keep up but not back to back pulls.

Keep in mind this is on our dyno, which has pretty big fans but obviously can't simulate the amount of frontal air flow deep in to higher gears and higher MPH. However, a good FMIC can still handle this as I have tested them in the same conditions on our dyno.

When I get some time, I'll do the same pull on the street.

It should be interesting to see the same data once I put the Evo 10 OEM FMIC on.

Ok a little update.

I've been swamped so I haven't had any free time to work on the car at all. Just been driving it and doing some ecu tweaks here and there. The car has 11XX miles on it now.

However I have been assembling a nice little pile of parts for the project.

Expect reviews / data / photos on the current list here soon, it's looking like it's going to be a fun project! ;)

1. Eibach prokit lowering springs (just need to lower the car a little, keeping it simple for now)

2. Injector Dynamic 1000cc injectors (for E85 conversion)

3. BlaqOps single pump upgrade (for E85 conversion)

4. Zeitronix ZT-22 Wideband Air/Fuel Ratio Meter with ZR-2 Multi Gauge

5. Evo 10 FMIC

6. Evo 10 IC pipes

7. Evo 9 metal BOV

8. Mini-Battery

9. CBRD BBX stock appearing turbo upgrade. ;)

10. Test pipe with in-line mini-muffler

11. GM 3-port boost solenoid

12. Tephra Map-switching mod with knock light

That's about it for now. Hoping to do a big chunk of the things on the list in the next couple weeks.

Im stalking your setup, Bryan. Can the mini-battery handle your sub & accessories?
-E85 is coo but I dont want to get stuck with afew gas station with E85.

I got my parts sitting in my garage still. Need mo'money.
Money is tight so my project isnt coming along as I would like to.

Once I get my money right, & if I still decide not to sell all these parts I collected.
I would want to get my EVO X turbo internal custom built.
Would it be cheaper to get one that already has custom internal?

What kind of power are you aiming for 300-400-500?

Evo 10 OEM 18x8.5 Enkei wheels:

Install was VERY tight in places but I only had to do one tiny little modification.

Here is how close it is to the AC condensor part:

One tab on the bumper beam has to be bent to clear the CBRD Fmic:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/albums/RA_Sportback_051610/FMIC_and_Pipes/CBRD_FMIC_05.jpg

The FMIC also pushes down just slightly on the undertray. Every thing goes back on ok but the undertray buldges just a tiny bit underneath.

Great FMIC from CBRD though. Chad is making some killer parts!

Will get actual performance data soon....

Got some data with the CBRD FMIC upgrade today.

HUGE difference over the stock FMIC as far as actually working like a intercooler. ;)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/2010_RA/060510/OEM_vs_CBRD_FMIC_060510.gif

Notice that with the CBRD data, the ambient temp at the MAF was approx 85F, where with the OEM it was approx 67F, so it was approx 20F warmer day, and the CBRD still never got heatsoaked like the OEM did pre-WOT.

Through 2nd and 3rd gear WOT, the CBRD FMIC never exceeds 10F warmer at the intake manifold then the temp at the MAF, where the OEM was almost 40F warmer then at the MAF!

Glad to finally have a proper intercooler on this car, espically with the summer temps coming... :)

Put the RA on the dyno today after adding some parts.

The car sits with these mods currently, everything else is 100% stock:

Mitsu metal OEM bov (Evo 9/10)
Evo 10 upper/lower intercooler piping
CBRD FMIC
UR test pipe
GST Boost pill upgrade

It was about 30-35F warmer today (Approx 85F) then the last time (approx 55F) the car had been on the dyno. Which I'm sure skewed things a bit unfortunately.

I also think I might be over-spinning the dinky OEM turbo at this point and the larger FMIC might be a little too big for this toy turbo. ;)

It started getting warmer in the dyno room so I decided to end the session early. I think it's time to upgrade the turbo on this car. :)

Today it put down:

221 whp / 268 wtq
23 psi peak, falling to 12.5 psi

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/2010_RA/060510/RA_SB_testpipeFMIC_060510.jpg

Here is today compared to last time when it was 100% stock but tuned (and approx 30-35F cooler out)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/2010_RA/060510/RA_modded_vs_stock_060510.jpg

As you can see it gained a healthy amount of power (+27wtq / +20whp) in the low to mid range but struggled past 6,000 rpm.

bryan@gst
06-06-2010, 01:43 PM
The good news is the car is now making +70 wtq / +60 whp over 100% bone stock at 4,000 rpm which is pretty impressive for such a small turbo:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/2010_RA/060510/RA_vs_stock_060510.jpg

I think it's time to get away from the stock turbo subaru type graphs and get a real turbo on this RA. :)

They are OEM evo 10 Enkei, which are 18x8.5 +38

Tires are 235/40/18 Continental DWS

I would have used 245/40/18 but I couldn't find that size in stock anywhere.

LOL.

Anyways..., yeah, they'll all be stiffer (Don't say it). WORKS claims "Our Ride springs do NOT sacrifice comfort or ride quality like the others on the market since the one-piece integrated bumpstops with the dust boot cannot be shortened." I have the WORKS springs and I can definitely feel the difference.

Ok bad news first.

Look like I have a pretty good boost leak as the car is running funky rich fueling. I'm kicking myself for not boost leak testing the car after install.

I'm tired and it's late so I'm calling it a day. I'll try to boost leak test the car tomorrow.

Good news:

Ok so here is where the car sits with the CBRD BBX lite, so far, on 91 octane.

Mods:

CBRD FMIC
CBRD BBX Lite stock appearing turbo
Evo 10 Exhaust manifold
Specialty-Z 02-Downpipe combo
Ultimate racing test pipe with mini muffler
Stock catback and mid pipe
Injector Dynamic 1000cc injectors
Evo 10 Intercooler pipes
Evo 9 metal BOV
GM 3-port boost solenoid
AEM intake
Tuned using EcuFlash and Tephra V1 map switch + knock light rom upgrade.
91 octane

+ 120 whp gains at 7400 rpm!

+ 95 whp peak to peak gains

24.5 psi

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/082110/me_SBRA_BBXlite_082110.jpg

You can see the dip in the mid range that I couldn't dial out yet. I think there is some airflow issues there with the stock catback and this turbo. You can see the associated dip in boost in this chart:

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/EVO/evo_tunes/me/RA_SB_032810/082110/RA_BBXlite_PSIandGS_082110.gif

The boost plot is tuned with the strategy that I didn't want to bring the boost on as a spike or hit hard because of the SST trans. I did do a couple pulls where I brought it on pretty strong and it would hit target 24.5 psi at around 3900 rpm, in 3rd gear, which is only about 300rpm later then the stock RA turbo.

MAF grams/sec plotted as well. At 24.5 PSI it peaked at 365.7 which is 48.37 lb/min. The stock RA turbo peaks about 33 lb/min and the stock Evo 10 turbo around 41 lb/min for reference.

So far very impressed with this turbo. It's making great power with the limited amount of mods on this car and the stock catback!

- The stock RA turbo peaks about 33 lb/min and the stock Evo 10 turbo around 41 lb/min for reference

MAF Volts: Peak of 4.83v

IDC: Peak of 73.7% at 11.3 AFR

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/CBRD_BBX_LITE/CBRD_BBX_Lite_Data_91oct.gif

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dyno power results:

Over 120 whp gains at 7400 rpm!

+ 100 whp peak to peak gains

320 whp / 275 wtq

Keep in mind the list of mods, which includes the stock catback still. I also limited the torque for the purpose of preserving the SST transmission for now. :)

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/CBRD_BBX_LITE/me_RASB_BBX_320whp_082810.jpg

Needless to say, the turbo upgrade has totally transformed the car into a true hot hatch!

For reference, a Evo 10 with comparable mods but full TBE puts down about 340-350whp on our dyno with a BBX Full (non-lite)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up is E85! Stay tuned!

Wow. I wonder if you will offer a full do-it-yourself kit when you are done with this?

Good Luck DIY post from Performance shop. Because They're in it to make money to pay for the high as rent ,to damn greedy property owners, for the shop.

That'll be like iphone giving up its secrets so other company can make money copying iphone technical secrets, called "Intellectual property"

Im stand from a position of helping other with the same car as mine so we can all learn & understand how to fix & bolt-on parts ourselves. Speed up learning curves & process.
But that kind of help can hurt the performance shop & their business.

Just try to learn as much as you can, but support the local shops.
Without them we will not know what kind of performance our RA is capable of & spend money on R&D, trial & errors. etc..

I want to install my EVO X turbo & all the parts I have & I want to do the actual work but I need guidance & tools. Because I wanna to learn & maybe get a part-time job @ a performance shops but no experience on paper or schooling to be a mechanic.

SB is rumored to be heavier then the sedan, which makes sense to me, however I have yet to see posted actual weights.

Bryan how much did you spend on all those parts?

That is a good question. I would look at the mod list and cross-reference the prices and add it up.

I learned a long time ago to not do that, but nothing is stopping you from doing it. :)

Ok went to finally tune the RA on E85.

Unfortunatly I ended up maxing the fuel system out pretty quickly for some odd reason. Not sure why, I'm going to have to look over everything as this same fuel setup is good for a little over 400whp and 28psi or so on the Evo 10's, on E85 I've tuned on our dyno.

On the good side, at only 25psi (only .5 psi more then my 91 octane tune) the car made:

358 whp / 311 wtq

Which is pretty impressive to me with the "low" boost and still having the stock catback.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/CBRD_BBX_LITE/me_SB_RA_E85vs91_100210.jpg

She sure zips along with 360whp though. :)

California laws are getting more strict on modified exhaust.
Im not a fan of loud exhaust either. To get that kinda of power & staying quiet is impressive, well at least for my dd ra anyway...

I saw AMG that out ran mid 11sec 1/4mile car that had everything modified & deafening loud exhaust & beat the other car doing so while being ultra quiet for 11sec AMG car.

Stealth is what I always admire & you can have the edge if the other cars cant hear you getting on the throttle.

So I threw the Sportback back on the dyno today just to check the AFR and clean it up a little if I had to. 3rd gear was all good, pretty much running right in spec power wise from last time.

Also did a pull in 4th to make sure everything was ok.

I'm still impressed by the power this thing is making at the boost level and still with stock catback.

370whp / 326 wtq in 4th gear.

26.5 psi peak and I taper it to about 24.5 psi up top to keep the Injector duty cycles under 100%.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/020511/me_SB_020511.jpg

The little dip in 4th gear at 6500 is because I have the boost error correction tight to make sure I don't max out the IDC's up top.

I am now getting a little bit of logged clutch slip but I can't feel nor do I see it really register in the power curve (yet). I really wish the RA had S-Sport mode to get the clutch pressure up a little higher. I would love the added pressure with the power the car is making.

http://norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/2010_RA_Sportback/020511/Slip_RA_020511.gif

I did another 4th gear pull on the street to show how well the CBRD BBX lite spools in 4th.

26psi in 4th at 3500rpm.

You know what I mean.. Have you and the boys been bored and took it out back with the L and played see who is gonna win till redline. Have you kicked the shit out of it unlike the members of SCE who just talk about it.
My question is if I buy it, will it survive.

I saw somewhere you are making 400... Are you using it fully. WOT doesnt mean nothing really to me if its for 3 seconds to get on an onramp. I have seen OMG my stocker blew up and then you have a high hp, I beat the piss out of the RRE shop RA around Fontana in Nov RTA and Im looking for the correlation between certain ones going bang and others weathering the storm...

No it hasn't seen the track and probably never will. My Evo is/was for the track.

It's my fun daily driver with a good amount of added power that I can go WOT and hit 7500rpm almost every day with. It's also a sleeper and has caught alot of other cars off guard.

Catback is on the car!

I decided to try out the Magnaflow in hopes it would be the quietest of the bunch. Plus I got a great deal on it from Mike@RRE. Thanks Mike!

I wasn't too crazy about the side inlet on the muffler which causes the odd bend of the piping off to one side, but in the end, you can't see it too much unless you squat down or sit down behind the car. The slip fittings were also not my first choice but I think they will be fine. At some point I will also take out the neck-down right where it comes off the cat.

What I do love is the OEM style tips. They are the perfect size, not too big, and fit in the Sportback exhaust bumper cutouts perfectly.

I've only driven it for abour 20mins so far but it's actually much quieter then I imagined it would be. I think the 'mini-muffler' test pipe I have is helping this. I have a feeling I might still put a small resonator in the midpipe to mellow it out a little bit when on throttle.

So far so good. :) Here are the photos. Pardon the dirty car.

I was very disappointed to say the least about the fitment issues with Wayne's calipers. As I explained to him, the clearance on that setup is close no matter what we do. I will help him get it sorted out one way or another, though. He has been very patient, and I have real respect for that.

Bryan: I anticipate that the issues that you are having are brake-shield related, as was posted on EvoM. Beyond that, I am anxious to see what happened.
