View Full Version : HID kit help- only one side works

I recently installed an HID kit on my RA and only the left side works. I've gone through most of the troubleshooting, so I'm sure all of the connections are correct and none of the components are faulty (ie bulbs, ballasts). I've read that my next option is to install resistors on the side that isn't working which will tell the battery it needs to send more current to that side. Am I understanding this correctly? Is there anything else I can do to get both sides working without purchasing additional parts?

I'm new to the site too, so I appreciate you veterans' help! :)

So I'm guessing you didn't go for the Recaro package?

I'm no electrical engineer, but my understanding of a resistor is that it reduces/restricts/limits the flow in the path of a current. I don't know how installing it on the side that doesn't work would help things. Otherwise, I'm not going to be much help - sorry! Have you tried calling the manufacturer of the product?

BTW, welcome to the site. Hopefully you will find it of use!

are you sure the bulbs work......when you turn on the headlights does it make some nosie like the ballasts are turning on......??

Yes as far as I have tested both bulbs are working, and the ballasts are receiving power. I did a little research and found it is usually a low voltage issue, but I thought someone here may have had some experience and could shed some light on the sitch... :p

Blackbeast- ouch! hah no I didn't, I couldn't justify 3g's for sound I can piece together for less, and I didn't think the recaro seats would save enough weight to make a big performance difference (but man those things are sweet!). And obviously I thought I could handle the HID conversion for $190 (I thought wrong...) Did you spring for the recaro package?

Yup. Went for the recaro package - lumped it into the financing...

I've done plenty of stereo installs in my time and I'm pretty much done with 'em. I can never seem to go cheap and always want high end stuff. This was a compromise for me, plus it got it done quick and factory clean. I knew I had to have the recaros since I wasn't getting an evo and had to have the HID so it was a no brainer for me. The seats alone are going for roughly $800 used. Plus this way everything is warrantied. Plus the 6 month Sirrius trial was a nice perk. I actually ended up renewing the contract when it ran out for 10 bucks a month.

I had installed an hid kit on my evolution x. The main problem I had was they wouldn't work with the daytime running lights. On mine the lights would flicker and shut off. You might need to pull the drl fuse. I don't know if this is your problem, but it will screw up after market hid's.

I actually did pull the drl fuse, I forgot to mention that. I wonder if I may have a faulty ballast? Although it worked when I cross-checked it by switching it to the other side.

You switched the ballast side to side? did you try switching the bulb side to side?

I didn't realize the RA was this much like the evo. On the Evo X base model, you can not turn off the DTRL, even if you pull the fuse. Someone came up with a way to bypass the wiring. Look on Evolutionm under Evolution X base HID install.

To tell you the truth what I did was, turn the lights on, then I drilled the knob, and put a small screw in it so I couldn't turn off the lights. Worked just fine, ok it's ghetto, but that's how I roll

Here's a plug & play solution: http://clubralliart.com/showthread.php?t=623

Since you have cross traded the bulbs and ballasts they work when switched, I would look at your connects again. Specifically to me it sounds like a bad ground connection, but I would look at all of the connections on the side that isn't working. Good luck and report back.

I know you probably have this problem solved as this is an old thread but wanted to let anyone know in the future. Got my harness from jrox and my hid kit. I installed everything looking at the connections carefully before installing. The plug that goes from jrox's harness to the balast on the driver side was wrong for my ballast. If you plugged it in so it would clip together the pos and neg wouldnt match so I just plugged it in the other way.

Everything is working great and the harness is awesome. I am very happy with it now. Just a little fyi for anyone installing harness and hids. Make sure to check those pos and neg. Thanks for a great product Jrox. Made hid's possible.

what kind of hid kit? it might be the hid kit thats bad or you probably just need a relay wire harness

The hid works fine. Hid flickers on drl mode(off position). when I turn on the headlights and wait 2 sec and turn it back to off position drl works without flickering. Will it shorten the lifespan of the ballast if I turn on drl after turnig on the headlights or should I get the jrox harness? Thanks in advance

The problem is the DRL signal. The DRL signal basically runs at a lower voltage. This voltage signal does not provide enough power to fully activate the HIDs. Therefore, your HIDs will flicker and/or short out. This does cause damage to your HIDs and will lessen the lifetime of your kit.

Check this thread:

It seems like the harness from the company in the video allows DRL to work fine.

A couple people ordered from them so I guess we will have to wait for them to get back with us to know for sure.

Yea I know I ordered one, I just wanted to know if hid on drl without flicker will damage ballast.

If they are ON at full intensity [Low Beams ON], then you should have nothing to worry about. My harness simply provides the option of controlling your headlights.

hi all, newb here.. i have a 2011 RA, all I see are people complaining about DRLs on the 08-2010 models.. Mine doesn't have DRL(since i've noticed), it's the non-recaro package RA. I wonder if i'll have a prob. Will check in soon!

IIRC, 2011 US models no longer have the DRL feature. Therefore, you can install HID's with no worry.

Dang... seems like us 2011 owners got lucky on a few things compared to the last two model years. I had been questioning the DRL on my car, but now I know it doesn't exist!
