Default varying oil levels

i changed my oil a while back. as always after i put the new oil in, i check the levels and the oil was between the 2 circles on the dip stick, so it was perfect. about 3 weeks later, i checked my oil levels and the level on the dipstick had actually rises about a centimetre and was now outside/above of the the circles. (note, i left my car over night on a flat surface before checking the oil so it wasn't on any incline, or just running).

i was concerned since i know that running too much oil is an issue, so i drained a little oil out, until the level was back to between the 2 circles on the dipstick.

now a week later, when i pull my dipstick out again, the level is back up above the 2 circles AGAIN.

i feel like the car is just trying to piss me off haha

What could be causing this?

That's a little much for heat expansion, so I'm going to hypothesise that the dipstick may not have been entirely depressed (snapped in) when the initial level was evaluated.

Second guess would be you lost a lug nut and were visited by the oil fairy.

i can assure you the dipstick was in right. even if it wasn't the first time, what would be the cause of it to happen again?

weird stuffs going on with sally the rally

i might plan an exorcist appointment.

In the past, when I've changed my oil, if I check the level right after I fill it, without running it or waiting for the oil to settle, I have seen what you describe. Generally, I try to wait a few minutes after filling it back up with oil, then start it and give it a run around the block. Then I'll park on a level surface and wait about 10 minutes before doing a final check on the level.

I will say that I've found that it only needs about 4.5-4.75 quarts of oil to refill on my 2009 after draining oil & filter. Staying with level of refill saves me having to guess what level my oil it at.

yeah i used 5 quarts the last time, and after i drained some out i should be sitting around the same level, 4.75ish quarts
