:-P That is what always makes building a motor so darn expensive. There are a bunch of "might as wells" and they are all $1k each :-/

Might as well port the head...
Might as well stroke it...
Might as well sleeve it...
Might as well put a new oil pump and water pump...

HAhahaha

On a somewhat related note, I haven't seen a replacement time frame for water pumps for the RA. Is there an life expectancy in any factory manual, or do you keep the same one until it leaks?

On the cars I've had with timing belts, it was a 'while your in there' sort of thing ever 4 years/60,000km or so. Even then there was debate if you should replace a non-leaking water pump or not.

The water pump is outside the motor and timing chain mess on the 4B11 motor. You replace it when it starts leaking.

Thanks for confirming there isn't a set replacement interval for water pump.

I should have worded my query more clearly in retrospect, as I do get the timing chain doesn't run the water pump on the 4B11. I was thinking more of the 4 year/60,000km interval in itself. In the cars I had, it was a 'while your in there' thing, only because the water pump ran off the back of the belt, and with the RA that is not the case.

Sure if you were in there you should do it. But since it isnt in there you are not in there :-) Water pumps tend to start leaking at 90k-120k miles. If you are paranoid and/or rich then think about it replacing it just because past that time. Usually they will leak a little out the weep hole (a little drain hole for coolant that gets past the seal) befire they start gushing. If you are paranoid and not rich, start checking out the weep hole for signs of coolant once every 15k miles or so once you are past 75k.

Think I'll wait and check the weep hole when the time comes, as I'm only at 27,000 miles.

I spent far too much money on the older Porsche I had for over a decade, proactively replacing things on a time schedule rather than waiting for issues. Needless to say I'd rather not go down that road again
